Welcome to Term 2 week 8.

Young Enterprise Pitches

Way back on the Friday of week 6 I was fortunate to be invited to watch some of our rangatahi present their Young Enterprise pitches. I was only going to stay for a short time but I moved some meetings around and stayed right to the end as I was so impressed. Our young people were so articulate and as I said to our staff at briefing on Monday “the world is going to be ok! These young people will make sure it is going to be!” That evening I went and bought a dog collar and lead from “West Coast Collie Co” who did a great presentation and brought their dog along - check them out on Facebook. I also saw AH Beerscuits present - another company I am going to buy from for my dog! The judges did a great job feeding back to our students and giving them lots of ideas to make their brands even better.

I was especially impressed with the year 12s presentation on creating a native nursery. It was so well done and we have some very exciting news to share with everyone soon about some amazing sponsorship that they have been given by Rotary. I also got to do a presentation at Rotary on Tuesday and hopefully everyone enjoyed it as much as they did the one presented by Lara and her young people!

West Coast Pathways Roadshows

We took all our Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 students to the West Coast Pathways Roadshow at Te Tai Poutini Polytech campus on Thursday 17th June. I popped down there for a look around and it was a really well organised event full of lots of educational and career opportunities. Thank you to Mr de Goldi for organising this.

Arahura Marae

On Sunday a number of teachers visited the Arahura Marae which was an opportunity to join those providing education in our takiwā to hear from Ngāti Waewae about their education strategy, hear some local stories, and have a kōrero about how we can support one another going forward. It was a fantastic day and I would like to thank Ngāti Waewae for their manaakitanga.

Safer Schools for All - staff professional development

On Tuesday after school we were fortunate to host Kirsty Farrant from the PPTA to work with us to address the issue of bullying of students and other members of the wider school community who are perceived to be different because of their sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

We looked at the following:

General awareness of the range of sexual orientations and gender identities including appropriate language;

The regulatory framework that requires schools to be proactive in this area;

Data about the health and wellbeing of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students in New Zealand secondary schools (from the Auckland University Youth 2000 series of surveys);

Strategies that teachers can use to promote a safe environment for all students.

On behalf of the staff I would like to thank Kirsty for this informative and useful presentation to celebrate diversity in our school and what we can do to ensure bullying and put-downs are eliminated.

West Coast Economic Strategy Workshop: Beyond 2050

On Tuesday I attended, all be it for a short time, the West Coast Economic Strategy Workshop: Beyond 2050 at Shanty Town. This was an awesome opportunity to meet with people across the Coast and discuss our future plans. I turned up at just the right time to watch a video from our rangatahi, including Clark Fountain one of our Head student’s talking about their dreams for the future. I was so impressed with all of them and how they wanted to make sure that everyone felt like they belonged on the coast.

Day of the Arts

On Wednesday we celebrated our first “Day of the Arts” which is a day to celebrate the Arts, including Kapa Haka, Art, Drama, Dance and Music. The day was non-uniform, sporting a 'wearable arts/bold colours' theme. At interval, we had our Kapa Haka students perform a piece to open the day. At lunch, we had some other performances. There was also art displayed throughout the day and at 6pm, there was an Art Exhibition in the Tech Block. We sold prints of students’ art and an auction for some bigger pieces. All money made went to Creative Industries, for their efforts and expenses for the upcoming Musical FAME.
