MRS SAMANTHA MORTIMER — JUL 1, 2021

Tēnā koutou katoa

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou

Welcome to Term 2 week 9.

West Coast Secondary Schools Junior Netball

On Friday of week 8 I went down to Hokitika and managed to catch our Junior games first game versus Westland High School. It was a great game to watch and they are a nice little team! What most impressed me was their respect not only for the other players but also for the umpires. Ka mau te wehi!

Forty Hour Famine

Clark Fountain organised a 40 hour famine activity at school. He did a fantastic job of planning and rallying both rangatahi and kaiako. Special thanks to Sian Utton who stayed with the students for the whole time and Nicki Mora from the Shed who supported Clark with the organisation. If you would like to donate to the cause please check on the post on our school Facebook page.

Staff only day FRIDAY 2ND JULY - Culturally Responsive Learning and Teaching: A Promise for Schooling

A reminder that on Friday 2nd July we are holding a staff only day with Angus and Sonja McFarlane. We are very excited about this learning opportunity as it fits in well with our school Charter and Annual Plan. I will be able to feed back more in my next newsletter.

School Ball - Saturday 3rd July

Our School Ball is going to be held on Saturday 3rd July. I am very much looking forward to my first Ball here at Greymouth High School. The year 13s, led by Mrs Tealy Lynch, have been doing an amazing job with the planning and I’ve also enjoyed watching them learn the waltz!

Gateway and Trades/Work experience

Kiri Russell has already taken over from Kate Halls as the person in charge of Trades at Grey High. She is the contact person if there are any questions or concerns about students on their Trades placements. Kiri is also overseeing any work experience placements - these are for students who do not want to be part of the Gateway programme but want to have some work experience in their chosen field.

In term 3, Shoshy Perchig is taking over from Kayla Hibbs as our Gateway co-ordinator and we are looking forward to working with her in this area.

We want to thank Kayla for her amazing work with our rangatahi and her very kind offer of continuing to support Shoshy and the rest of us when she moves on. I know we will still see her a lot as she is joining Tania Washer coordinating work at the business hub for businesses in the wider community.

Trades Academy

In terms of thank yous, I would also like to thank Tania Washer and her team and wish them all the best in their new premises. We still be working very closely together!
